Meet Kolin James

Kolin James is a furniture maker and educator currently based in Eastern New Hampshire.

Originally from rural Iowa, he began working with the medium of wood as a kid in his grandfathers backyard woodshop. After earning a degree in architecture, he spent several years as a practicing draftsperson and designer before leaving the field to pursue woodworking full-time.

While working towards a degree in furniture making, Kolin studied 17th thru 19th century building methods. He learned to incorporate modern machine techniques to produce the highest possible quality wooden objects with efficiency. He also researched various eras of design and production to better inform his own thoughts and ideas on the practice. He graduated from the North Bennet Street School in 2021.

His work is informed by the want for the skillful work, rather than lavish adornment, to be what gives the piece beauty. Kolin is most excited by work that was made out of necessity rather than desire. Strong lines, perfect functionality, and objects that will last generations are the traits he works to put into every piece.
